Toshiyuki Nagashima

I've always had a soft spot for actors like Toshiyuki Nagashima, the kind who walk onscreen and just feel solid, like a guy you'd trust to fix your fence. He came out of the gate in the late '70s and immediately started sweeping newcomer prizes, the Elan d'or, the Blue Ribbon, and by his mid-twenties he'd already grabbed a best-actor nod, which tells me the talent wasn't a fluke. What I love is that he never seemed flashy about it. There's this earthy, sunburnt-and-honest quality to him, a man who looks right at home near fields or the ocean rather than under neon. That's the kind of presence that ages well, getting richer and more weathered instead of fading. A real, lasting actor's actor.
