Trixie Mattel

Trixie Mattel fascinates me because the cartoonish exterior hides a serious artist. Originally from Marinette County, Wisconsin, and a University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee graduate, she stacks drag, comedy, songwriting and television hosting into one career without any of them feeling like a side hustle. I especially love that beneath the exaggerated Barbie-pink aesthetic sits a genuine folk musician who can actually play and write. That combination of high camp and earnest melancholy is rare, and it makes her work hit on more than one level. To me she represents self-invention done with both humor and craft, and I respect how openly she built her own lane.
