Volker Wieker

Military careers rarely move me, but Wieker's commands respect. Born in Lower Saxony in 1954, he rose from artillery officer to Chief of Staff of the Bundeswehr, Germany's top soldier. What stands out is that he served in nearly every major German deployment since 1996, from Bosnia to Kosovo to Afghanistan, before reaching the top. That is leadership earned in the field, not just behind a desk, and his Order of Merit and Legion of Merit reflect the trust placed in him. People like Wieker do the unglamorous, consequential work of holding an institution steady. I find that quietly admirable.
