Warner Dearns

Warner Dearns is a fascinating story of belonging. Born in Wellington and raised on rugby's home soil, he moved to Japan at fourteen and now anchors the lock position for Toshiba Brave Lupus while representing Japan internationally. I find the choice as compelling as the talent: a New Zealander pouring himself into the Japanese game and qualifying on residency. Still in his early twenties, he has enormous room to grow, and his aerial work already makes him a problem for opponents. He embodies how modern rugby crosses borders, and I expect him to be central to Japan's ambitions for years to come.
