Warren G is one of those artists who could have easily been overshadowed by the louder names coming out of Long Beach in the early '90s, but "Regulate" made sure that never happened. That song — built around a Michael McDonald sample, of all things — is genuinely perfect: smooth, cinematic, and so distinctly G-funk that it sounds like a whole season of summer condensed into four minutes. He grew up as Dr. Dre's stepbrother, which tells you something about the musical DNA he was surrounded by, and he absorbed every bit of it without just copying the formula. His debut album Regulate...G Funk Era holds up better than most people give it credit for, and the fact that he kept making music well into the 2000s shows real dedication to the craft.
