My Take
Whit Stillman is one of those rare directors I genuinely treasure. He builds entire films out of nothing but the witty, mannered conversation of young upper-class New Yorkers, and somehow it never gets dull. That Metropolitan earned an Oscar screenplay nomination with no spectacle, just talk, says everything about his gift. What I admire most is the balance: Harvard-bred irony that never curdles into contempt for his own characters. He works slowly and sparingly, but each film rewards rewatching as you catch lines you missed. For me, his restraint is the whole point.
