William, Prince of Wales

What interests me about Prince William is the gap between the job he inherited and the jobs he chose. Heir apparent from birth, he could have coasted on ribbon-cuttings; instead he flew search-and-rescue and air-ambulance helicopters, work where competence is measured in lives rather than headlines. That choice tells me more about his character than any title does. I also notice how deliberately he has modernized the role — steady, unflashy, attentive to causes his mother would have recognized. Monarchy is an odd institution to judge on merit, but as individuals go, William strikes me as a serious man preparing seriously for an unserious amount of scrutiny.
