Yasuko

Yasuko has one of the least likely resumes in Japanese comedy. She grew up in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, joined the Ground Self-Defense Force after high school, moved into comedy and television, and never quite left the military behind: she still holds a ready reserve commitment. Most comedians build a persona; she kept the one she already had, camouflage uniform and parade-ground posture included. What makes it work is that the brightness is not an act. Japanese variety television runs on mockery, and someone who is funny without needing a target is rarer than it sounds. She has also spoken openly about being raised in a children's home, without asking anyone for sympathy, and that is a large part of why audiences trust her. Her run as the charity marathon runner on Nippon Television's 24-Hour Television showed the whole country the same thing: exhausted, and still relentlessly good-humoured.
