Yutaka Takagi

I'll be honest, I have a soft spot for guys like Yutaka Takagi, the kind of player who didn't blow you away with brute power but instead drove you crazy with his legs. A speedy infielder out of Hofu in Yamaguchi by way of Chuo University, he made his living rattling pitchers and swiping bases, the sort of pesky, heads-up baseball I find way more fun to watch than another towering home run. What really gets me, though, is his second act. He's become this endlessly chatty, plainspoken voice in retirement, breaking the game down on TV and pouring his whole heart into YouTube, and you can just tell the man never stopped loving baseball for a single second. Pushing seventy and still bursting with energy, ribbing and hyping young players with that breezy, generous patter, he's honestly an easy guy to root for.
