My Take
Yoshiaki Kanemura pulled off the transition that most retired athletes attempt and few complete. Born in 1963 in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture, he came up through Hotoku Gakuen High School, a school with deep baseball tradition, and played professionally before moving into work as a tarento, the broad Japanese media category covering television and radio personalities. Here is what outsiders tend to underrate about that second act. Japanese professional baseball retires dozens of players every year, and the overwhelming majority disappear from public view within a season or two. Staying visible requires a completely different skill set from the one that got you drafted: timing, self-deprecation, the ability to explain the game to people who do not follow it closely. Kanemura found a voice that works in the Kansai broadcasting culture, which is its own demanding register, and that made him hard to replace. A 185-centimeter frame got him onto the field. Something else entirely kept him on the air long after he left it.
