Yoshiko Sakakibara

Yoshiko Sakakibara has the kind of voice that makes you sit up straight before you decide to. Born in Tokyo in 1956, raised in Kashiwa, Chiba, and trained in drama at Toho Gakuen, she brings a stage actor's weight to animation, and you hear it most in the commanders and aristocrats she is known for, Haman Karn in the Gundam saga and Kushana in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. What I find remarkable is the exhaustion she hides under the ice. Her characters are never simply cold; they are tired of carrying power. She narrates too, and one line from her lends a program instant authority. The Kazue Takahashi Award in 2021 felt overdue.
