My Take
Brown is one of those performers who raises the temperature of any scene she enters. Shirley on Community could have been a one-note church lady; Brown gave her warmth, steel, and a flash of menace that made the character genuinely unpredictable, which is my favorite kind of sitcom work. Her path from East Cleveland through the University of Akron to network television reads like a working actor's resume rather than a star's, and I think that groundedness is exactly what she brings on screen. Add a voice-acting career built on that instantly recognizable warmth, and you have a character actress of real range. Ensembles are lucky to have her.
