Zucchero

Zucchero fascinates me as the man who smuggled American blues and soul into Mediterranean pop and made it sound utterly his own. Born Adelmo Fornaciari in Reggio Emilia, he kept the nickname his primary teacher gave him, sugar, which says plenty about his disarming charm. That gravelly, weathered voice carries a melancholy and earthiness you rarely expect from such a sunny country, and the Commander of the Order of Merit confirms his stature at home. I value artists whose sound refuses national borders, and his gritty authenticity is exactly why he has been embraced far beyond Italy.
