Abiy Ahmed

Abiy Ahmed is one of the most genuinely difficult figures I write about. The Nobel Peace Prize he won in 2019 for ending the long standoff with Eritrea felt, at the time, like a hopeful turning point for the Horn of Africa. What followed, the brutal internal conflict, complicated that legacy enormously, and I think it's a sobering case study in how fragile peace really is. I won't pretend to a verdict here. What I will say is that leading a nation as vast and fractured as Ethiopia demands extraordinary nerve, and history's judgment of him is still being written.
