My Take
Mulatu Astatke is, to me, one of music's true architects. Born in Jimma and trained across London, New York, and Berklee in Boston, he fused jazz and Latin currents with traditional Ethiopian music to invent Ethio-jazz, a genre that simply did not exist before him. I'm endlessly drawn to that warm, mysterious sound; it feels like nowhere else on earth. That he remains active, decades on, and was honored as a Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences only deepens my respect. He's the rare artist who dissolved borders through sound, and I consider him a quiet giant of global music.
