Teddy Afro

Teddy Afro represents, for me, the rare musician who is also a conscience. Born in Addis Ababa in 1976, he broke through with Abugida in 2001 and almost overnight became a national figure. What pulls me in isn't just the songs but the defiance behind them; being called a rebellion artist on the world stage in 2017 says plenty. He was also convicted over a 2006 hit-and-run and imprisoned until 2009. He's a reminder that music can move not only hearts but entire nations. Even without understanding the language, I'm convinced that kind of fervor carries across any border. He feels like the sound of a country's soul.
