Public records list Ismail Omar Guelleh as a politician. Born on November 27, 1947, Ismail Omar Guelleh is from Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. That works out to 78 years old in 2026. Awards on record include Padma Vibhushan (2019).
My Take
Guelleh fascinates me less as a personality and more as a study in durability. Holding the Djibouti presidency since 1999, re-elected again and again into 2026, he has steered a tiny but strategically priceless nation perched on the Horn of Africa, where American, French and Chinese bases coexist on the same coastline. Long tenures invite obvious criticism about democratic openness, and I don't wave that away. Yet the sheer geopolitical tightrope he has walked for a quarter century commands a certain grudging respect. He is the kind of quiet power broker whose calculations I'd genuinely like to understand better.
