My Take
What I admire most about Adam Elliot is his refusal to scale up. Plenty of animators chase volume and gloss, but he keeps fingerprints in the clay, building bittersweet little portraits of misfits he calls Clayographies. Winning an Academy Award in 2004 could have pushed him toward commercial work, yet he stayed an independent auteur in Melbourne, mining tragicomedy with patience few directors have. Mary and Max remains the kind of film that makes you laugh and ache at once. To me he represents the quiet conviction that handcrafted, deeply personal work still matters in an industry obsessed with speed.
