Adrian Newey

Newey is the rare engineer whose name carries the weight of a champion driver. To me, he is the clearest proof that Formula One is won on the drawing board as much as on the track. Watching one man deliver title-winning cars across McLaren, Williams and Red Bull, then step up as Aston Martin's principal in his late sixties, I find almost stubbornly inspiring. His aerodynamics roots from Southampton feel like the secret: he thinks in airflow where others think in horsepower. For me he is motorsport's quiet author, the person actually holding the pen behind the legends.
