Ai Kawashima

Ai Kawashima, born in Fukuoka in 1986, is best known in Japan for two things that do not usually go together: a hit song and an enormous number of street performances. The hit came first, in 2003, when the duo I Wish released "Asueno tobira" (Door to Tomorrow). Most artists would have taken that as permission to move indoors permanently. Kawashima kept busking, and the sheer volume of those street shows became part of her identity as a performer. There is something clarifying about that choice. On a street corner nobody has bought a ticket, nobody owes you their attention, and you find out very quickly whether the song actually works. Her childhood was, by her own account and by public record, a difficult one. What she did with that is the part I respect most: rather than simply mining it for material, she has directed her work toward supporting children in circumstances resembling her own, in Japan and abroad. Turning private pain into a functioning form of help, and sustaining it over two decades, is a harder discipline than songwriting.
