My Take
I'll be honest, Akina Nakamori never felt like an idol to me so much as a storm that happened to sing. Most of the 1982 class beamed at you; she smoldered, refused to smile, and somehow that cool defiance was the most magnetic thing on TV. "Shojo A" had this bratty, dangerous edge, then "DESIRE" hit and she's slicing through a kimono like a samurai of pop, and by "Nanbasen" she's pouring out heartbreak so heavy it almost scares you. That range, from sulky teen to torch singer, is just nuts. She torched the "Star Tanjo" record before she'd even debuted, so the main-character aura was baked in. Whatever ups and downs her career took, she kept clawing back on the strength of that voice, and decades on it still doesn't sound dated to me. A genuine one-off.
