Alexandre Rockwell

I have a soft spot for filmmakers like Alexandre Rockwell who do nearly everything themselves, directing, writing, producing, editing, even shooting. That kind of hands-on authorship is the heartbeat of true independent cinema, and his 1992 Sundance Grand Jury Prize confirms he had the goods. What interests me is the choice it implies: rather than smoothing his vision through a studio machine, he kept control and kept it personal. Now teaching the next generation, he's passing the craft along instead of guarding it. I'll always take that sincerity and self-reliance over flashier, committee-built spectacle any day.
