My Take
Alison Brown is one of my favorite kinds of artist: the credentialed rebel. Walking away from a Harvard education to chase the banjo, then refusing to keep that banjo inside bluegrass, weaving in jazz, Latin, and Celtic threads, takes real conviction. The Béla Fleck comparisons are flattering but I think they undersell how distinctly her own her voice is. What I admire is the deliberate risk: she had every safe option and chose the strings instead. Her Grammy recognition feels less like luck and more like the world finally catching up to a singular musical imagination.
