My Take

Andrea Absolonova's story stays with me because it's so unexpected and so brief. She was a serious athlete first, a member of the Czech high diving national team, before pivoting into adult film and modeling under the name Lea De Mae. That arc from elite sport to a completely different industry is unusual enough to make me curious about the person behind it. What lands hardest, though, is the ending: she died of brain cancer in 2004 at just 27. I find it hard to read these dates without feeling the loss of someone who clearly had range and was gone far too soon.
