Andrey Zvyagintsev

Andrey Zvyagintsev is, for me, one of the essential filmmakers of contemporary Russia. Winning the Golden Lion with his debut The Return is the stuff of legend, yet his work never coasts on early acclaim; it keeps dissecting Russian society with a cold, neo-noir clarity that genuinely unsettles me. The Cannes screenplay prize and Golden Globe confirm a vision the world had to reckon with. I admire how much he says through silence and bleak landscape rather than exposition. His films are heavy, sometimes punishing, but they always leave a residue, and that is the mark of a serious artist.
