Andy Newmark

Newmark is, to me, a session drummer of a rare order. Sly and the Family Stone, then George Harrison, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Roxy Music, the list reads like a history of great records. When Sly Stone himself calls you the best drummer he ever worked with, there is nothing left to argue. What I love is the restraint: he never crowds the song, he holds up its frame with unshakable groove. That quiet, structural musicianship is the real soul of a record. You may not know his name, but odds are he is playing on an album you treasure.
