My Take
To me, Rourke was the beating heart of the Smiths. His melodic, funk-inflected bass lines gave that band a low-end groove utterly unlike anything else in 1980s indie rock, and being called one of his generation's greatest bassists was no exaggeration. He could play guitar and cello too, but it's the bass that defined him: inventive, fluid, always serving the song from the shadows. Losing him in 2023 at just 59 stung. Yet his playing lives on inside those records, immortal. I respect musicians who build the foundation while others take the spotlight, and few did it better.
