My Take

I am genuinely more interested in players like Araz Abdullayev than in the global superstars. A winger from Baku grinding it out for a domestic Azerbaijani side and his national team is, to me, the quieter and more human side of football. Wingers live on a knife edge: dazzling when the dribble comes off, anonymous when it does not, and that volatility is fascinating. Carrying your country's shirt is a weight I cannot really imagine. The records here are thin, but I always feel a quiet respect for footballers who keep running for a flag rather than a headline. He is somebody's source of pride.
