I'll be honest, Junya Ogawa is the rare politician I find genuinely easy to root for. On paper he's the textbook elite: born in Takamatsu, University of Tokyo, a stint as a government bureaucrat before jumping into politics. But there's none of that slick, hungry-for-power energy you brace yourself for. I first clocked him through the documentary "Why You Can't Be Prime Minister," and watching him grind through one tough election after another, still talking straight to voters with this slightly awkward sincerity, kind of got to me. He could clearly play the game and cut corners, but he's almost too earnest to do it, and it costs him. Even climbing to Secretary-General of the Constitutional Democratic Party, he never quite shed that idealistic, green streak. Sure, you can yell at him to stop preaching and deliver results, but honestly, that clumsy decency is exactly why I keep pulling for the guy.
