Asier Illarramendi

Asier Illarramendi is the kind of midfielder who makes you appreciate the thankless art of winning the ball back and keeping things ticking — no flash, all substance. Growing up in Mutriku on the Basque coast and coming through Real Sociedad's academy, he was part of that golden generation that took La Real into the Champions League in 2013, which still feels like a fairytale for a club that size. His move to Real Madrid never quite clicked the way everyone hoped, but returning to San Sebastián he became the heartbeat of the squad again, the guy who covered every blade of grass. Watching him dictate tempo with quiet authority — the interceptions, the simple passes that kept attacks alive — reminded you that a great defensive midfielder is worth his weight in gold even if he never makes the highlight reel.
