Ayahi Takagaki

The single most telling fact about Ayahi Takagaki is that she trained at Musashino Academia Musicae. She is a conservatory-trained singer who became a voice actress, and you can hear it in about four bars. Born in Tokyo on 25 October 1985, she landed her first substantial roles in 2007 — Jasmine in Deltora Quest, Lucia Nahashi in Venus Versus Virus — and launched a music career in 2009 with the opening theme for First Love Limited. Singing voice actors are not unusual in Japan; the industry has built an entire economy on them. What separates her is the technique underneath. Most anime vocal work sits in a pop-idol register, and hers sits on classical breath support, which gives her a different kind of authority on a ballad. Holding both careers at full strength, rather than letting the music become a side product of the acting, is the part I respect.
