B. Saroja Devi

What stays with me about B. Saroja Devi is the sheer scale of a seventy-year career spanning Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema, around 200 films, in an era when crossing language barriers was no small feat. Her work simply spoke for itself. Being honored with the Padma Bhushan and, posthumously, the Karnataka Ratna confirms her stature. To me she represents the kind of regional giant world cinema too often overlooks, and discovering her feels like a small act of justice.
