Bai Lu

Bai Lu is, to my eyes, one of the reigning queens of Chinese costume drama, and the breadth of her output is what impresses me most. Changzhou-born and working as actress, model, and singer, she has anchored hit after hit, from Story of Kunning Palace to Till the End of the Moon. What I find compelling is the contrast between her delicate, almost porcelain image and the steely command she brings to wuxia and palace intrigue, genres that demand real physical grit beneath the silk costumes. Her reach across Asia is well earned, and frankly she deserves a far bigger audience in Japan than she currently has.
