My Take
What interests me about Barack Obama is the writer underneath the politician. Two Grammy wins for narrating his own audiobooks, a Nobel Peace Prize awarded largely on the strength of rhetoric, and a memoir, A Promised Land, that reads like literature: language was always his real instrument of power. Plenty of leaders have policies; very few can make a nation feel narrated. History will debate his political record for decades, but his ability to frame American identity as an unfinished story is, to me, his most durable achievement. He is proof that in politics, the best-told argument often travels further than the best-funded one.
