Barrie Chase

Barrie Chase belongs to a vanishing kind of performer, one whose artistry lived entirely in the body. Born in 1933, she danced and acted through an era with no editing tricks to lean on, which means every graceful moment on screen was earned in rehearsal. I find that purity moving. She began formal dance lessons at three and gave up a ballerina's dream to support her mother in Los Angeles; the discipline behind classic-era dance was brutal. I admire performers who let the work speak and walk away without fanfare, and Chase strikes me as exactly that sort of understated, deeply skilled artist.
