My Take
Barry Levinson strikes me as a craftsman who turned his own Baltimore into cinema. Everyone cites the Rain Man Oscar, but I love him most for Diner and Good Morning, Vietnam, films that live and die on rhythm of speech and the space between people. Wag the Dog showed he could be wickedly prescient, too. Collecting an Academy Award, a Golden Bear, a Silver Bear and an Emmy is an absurd range for one career. What impresses me even more is the appetite: still directing into his eighties, still chasing new formats. He is unflashy but unwavering, and that durability earns my respect.
