My Take
Bellamy Young is one of those actors who spent years as a reliable guest star before 'Scandal' finally handed her a role worthy of her range. Mellie Grant could have been a one-note scorned wife, but Young made her a fierce, wounded, scheming, weirdly sympathetic powerhouse who often stole episodes outright. That ugly-cry monologue work is some of the best on network drama. I also love that she trained at Yale and Oxford and is a genuine singer, which gives her performances a precision you can feel. She is the definition of a slow-burn career that paid off spectacularly when the right part arrived.
