Billy Mackenzie

Billy Mackenzie is one of those voices I keep returning to. That soaring high tenor he brought to the Associates felt almost reckless in its beauty, refusing to sit politely inside post-punk conventions. To me he was an artist of pure instinct, more interested in chasing a feeling than chasing a hit, which probably explains why mainstream success eluded him. His lone solo album, Outernational, hints at how much more he had to give. Losing him at thirty-nine in 1997 still feels like an unfinished sentence.
