Blake Mills

Blake Mills strikes me as a kind of behind-the-scenes magician. His guitar and production credits read like a who's who of modern music: Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, Alabama Shakes, Beck, Perfume Genius, and on and on. He's a capable singer-songwriter in his own right, yet his rarest gift is an ear that makes everyone around him sound better. What I admire most is that he never needs his name out front; the people who listen closely know exactly whose hands shaped the record. Being the craftsman who lights up the stars might be the most luxurious career of all, and I'd happily applaud him for it.
