Bowen Yang

What draws me to Bowen Yang is that he came up through the writers' room before stepping in front of the camera. Comedians who first learned to build a joke on the page tend to have sharper timing and a better sense of structure, and you feel that craft in his work. Brisbane-born and NYU-trained, carrying a Chinese-American identity, he never leans on impressions of someone else; he is funny as himself, which is the rarest and most durable kind of comedy. The 2021 Time 100 nod felt earned. I find irreplaceable performers far more interesting than merely skilled ones, and he is exactly that.
