My Take
Brandon Roy is, for me, the NBA's great unanswered question. Rookie of the Year in 2007 and the soul of Portland's revival, he had everything until his knees betrayed him after just six seasons. From Garfield High to the University of Washington to stardom, the arc was thrilling and then abruptly cruel. What earns my respect is the second act: returning to coach kids at his old high school. I'm less interested in lamenting what his body took away than in admiring how he turned a shortened career into a chance to lift the next generation.
