My Take

Brenda Romero is one of the designers I respect most in all of games. A programmer out of Clarkson University, she helped shape the legendary Wizardry RPGs, then refused to stay comfortable, turning to non-digital work that treats play itself as a serious message. To me that is the mark of a true author: she does not just decorate rules, she makes the rules speak. Her BAFTA Special Award in 2017 felt overdue. Beyond the craft, I find her career inspiring because she stayed at the front of an industry that long underrepresented women. Romero proves that a game's mechanics can carry real meaning.
