My Take

Cẩm Ly is the sort of artist I find quietly impressive. A singer from Ho Chi Minh City who broke through nationally in 1993, she built her name on both pop and Southern Vietnamese folk music, refusing to abandon tradition for trend. With sisters Minh Tuyết and Hà Phương also singing, she clearly comes from a household where music runs in the blood. What appeals to me is the longevity: an official site still running and decades of devotion from her audience. There's something deeply grounding about a performer who keeps singing the songs of her own soil, and I'd bet that voice travels well beyond Vietnam.
