Carlos Prates

Carlos Prates is the kind of fighter who sneaks up on you — born in Taubaté, São Paulo, which isn't exactly the most famous city in Brazil, yet here he is competing at the very top of the UFC welterweight division. His background as a Muay Thai and kickboxer bleeds through in his striking, which tends to be sharp, calculated, and genuinely dangerous. The nickname "The Nightmare" — which you can see right on his Instagram handle — isn't just bravado; watching his fights you get why opponents don't sleep easy before facing him. By the mid-2020s he'd climbed into the top tier of the welterweight rankings, and I think the best of him is still ahead. Brazil keeps producing world-class fighters, and Prates feels like one of the sharper exports of his generation.
