My Take

Charles Heung fascinates me precisely because his greatest work happened off-camera. Founding Win's Entertainment and later China Star, he helped launch or sustain the careers of Stephen Chow, Chow Yun-fat, Jet Li, Johnnie To and Andy Lau, which is to say he quietly shaped an entire golden age of Hong Kong cinema. I tend to be more impressed by the people who build the stage than by those who stand on it, and Heung is a textbook case. Moving from acting to producing requires a different kind of vision, and his eye for talent strikes me as genuinely rare.
