Chen Wei-ting

What strikes me about Chen Wei-ting is how early he put himself on the line. Born in 1990 in Miaoli City, Miaoli County, and studying at National Tsing Hua University, he stepped into LGBTQ and social activism while barely out of his teens, at a time when that stance carried real cost in Taiwan. I tend to admire the voices that do the slow groundwork, and Taiwan's later leadership on marriage equality in Asia didn't happen in a vacuum. To me he represents the conviction-driven young activists of the 2014 Sunflower Student Movement, who occupied the Legislative Yuan and whose courage shifted a society's center of gravity.
