Cheng Yi

Cheng Yi strikes me as a textbook example of the depth running through Chinese television talent. Trained at the Central Academy of Drama and grinding away since his 2011 debut, he is no overnight product. What I respond to is his control in fantasy and xianxia roles, where it would be easy to coast on costume and atmosphere; instead he carries real emotion through the eyes. That academic grounding gives him a stability many flashier stars lack. I suspect he is still underrated outside China, and I would not be surprised to see his reach widen considerably across Asia.
