My Take

Chrissy Amphlett is the kind of performer I instinctively root for: fearless, provocative, and entirely herself. As the face of Divinyls, she weaponized a brash, openly sexual persona at a time when that took real nerve, lacing her lyrics and interviews with subversive humor. Coming out of Geelong, she was a complete performer who could sing and act with equal conviction. There's a danger to her presence that no polished pop act could fake. Her death in 2013 was a loss, but the sheer commitment to her own outrageous voice still resonates. I love artists who simply refuse to be tamed.
