My Take
I'll be honest, Christa Deguchi is one of those athletes whose story hooks me before I've even watched a single match. Born in 1995 in Shiojiri, a quiet mountain town in Nagano, to a Canadian father and a Japanese mother, she ended up carrying the maple leaf onto the world judo stage in the -57kg lightweight class, and that crossover identity just fascinates me. At 160cm she's not towering over anyone, so what she brings instead is grip-fighting nerve and that relentless, won't-let-go intensity, the kind of fighter who wears opponents down and then detonates in the decisive second. I love that a kid from a sleepy valley grew up to win a world title and then Olympic gold in Paris. Something about that arc makes me want to quietly root for her every time.
