My Take

Christian Boltanski, who died in 2021, is an artist whose work genuinely gives me chills. The French sculptor and photographer built installations out of old clothing, faded photos and recorded heartbeats, confronting death and memory head-on. His Les Archives du Cœur, archiving the world's heartbeats on a Japanese island, still strikes me as one of the most haunting ideas in contemporary art. He was honored with the Praemium Imperiale and Japan's Order of the Rising Sun, so his bond with Japan ran deep. Few artists make the fragility of human existence land this quietly. He left work that's impossible to forget.
